
BIAKA UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF BUEA

Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) is located at Bokoko-Buea (about 4 to 5 kilometers from Mile 17 Motor Park). BUIB is a constituent of Biaka Group LTD, which also encompasses Biaka Hospital and the Dr. Biaka Memorial Foundation (DBMF). Founded in 1982 by Dr. Lawrence Francis Tonye Biaka, BUIB evolved from the St. Veronica’s Medical Complex into a university institute in 2016, following the passing of its founder in 2014. Dr. Mrs. Francisca Biaka assumed leadership of the institution thereafter.
For over 27 years, BUIB has been a cornerstone of higher education in Cameroon, fostering academic excellence and professional development. During this period, the university has graduated more than 20,000 students, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to excel in their respective fields.

AUTORISATION MINESUP
- BUIB operates under the authorization of the Ministry of Higher Education (Decision No. 16-01806/L/MINESUP/DDES/ESUP/SDA/OPC) and is mentored by the University of Buea, in accordance with Ministerial Order No. 013/0050/MINSUP/09 JAN 2013.
BUIB is authorized to operate five schools:
- School of Health Sciences (the founding entity)
- School of Education
- School of Management Sciences
- School of Agricultural Sciences
- School of Engineering and Technology
The university offers undergraduate (Bachelors) and postgraduate programmes, as well as Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across these disciplines. As of the 2024/2025 academic year, BUIB’s student population exceeds 3,000.

Research, Development, and Outreach
Through the DBMF foundation, BUIB actively participates in health campaigns, free screening exercises, environmental clean-ups, and Public Health Education programmes in collaboration with local councils and health Institutions.
BUIB maintains active collaborations with over 60 national and international institutions, including Drexel University (USA), Crayon Healthcare Organization (India), the University of Buea (Cameroon), South West Development Authority (SOWEDA) -Buea, The Cameroon Chamber of Commerce, Industry Mines and Crafts (Douala), South West Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal industries (MINEPIA) – Buea, South West Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER) – Buea, Yaoundé University Teaching Hospital (YUTH), the Port Authority of Douala (Cameroon), just to name a few. These partnerships facilitate the exchange of academic and scientific knowledge, enriching the learning experience for students and staff.
Student Admission and Intake Policy
Student admissions are conducted annually from June to October. The process involves a formal application, compliance with specific admission criteria, and review by an admissions committee. International students from French-speaking backgrounds are offered a two-months intensive English course prior to the academic year to facilitate their transition.
Student Life on Campus
Campus life at BUIB is vibrant, blending academic rigour with social, cultural, and personal development opportunities. Students engage in lectures, research, and group projects while participating in clubs, sports, and cultural events. On-campus hostels provide self-contained apartments, studios, and single rooms conducive to private study, with robust security and a comfortable living environment. These accommodations foster independence and intercultural exchange among diverse peers.
The University boasts modern lecture halls, laboratories, simulation centers, digital classrooms, a well-equipped library, and a serene campus environment conducive for learning. The university library and technological resources support both learning and social connectivity. Career development opportunities, including internships and workshops, prepare students for professional success. BUIB’s formalized communication procedures ensure timely and transparent dissemination of academic updates, administrative notices, event announcements, and policy changes through a student guide. Biaka Hospital provides accessible, high-quality medical services to students.
Extracurricular activities include sports, music, and student-led social clubs. Students also participate in national and international commemorative events.
ACADEMIC GUARDIANSHIPS
- BUIB collaborates with three Cameroonian ministries with regulatory oversight:
- Ministry of Higher Education (issues HND certificates)
- Ministry of Public Health (oversees public health programmes)
- Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (supports vocational programmes)
PARTNERSHIPS
BUIB has forged significant partnerships with prestigious organizations, including the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé, Drexel University (Philadelphia, USA), the Fulbright Specialist Programme, and World Learning. BUIB holds the distinction of being the first private university in Cameroon to host the Fulbright Specialist Programme. Most recently, BUIB partnered with FHNW University of Switzerland to conduct research on cross-cultural cyber security between Cameroon and Switzerland, further enhancing its global academic footprint.
